Getting Rid of Fleas Inside
A flea infestation inside your home is a nightmare. Fleas not only nest on pets, but they can also infest carpets, rugs, and other fabrics. Getting rid of flea problems inside is nearly impossible if you don’t know what you’re doing. Luckily, this easy-to-follow guide will tell you exactly how to solve your problem.
This tutorial was written by a licensed pest control applicator (that’s me, hi!) and utilizes the same practices used by industry experts.
This tutorial uses the NatureTek Pro Kit as the means of treatment. Although not required to follow this guide, we recommend using NatureTek because it includes everything needed to solve flea issues, including the specific pest control products required, as well as the tools and safety equipment needed to apply it. 1. Get the Right Stuff
To solve flea issues, we will need to treat very thoroughly and consistently over a short period of time. You will need the right tools to accomplish this.
At NatureTek, we typically recommend Double-Gallon Kits exclusively for larger homes. However, this changes when you are dealing with flea infestations inside the home. If you are experiencing an interior flea infestation, we recommend you order a Double-Gallon Kit (we will explain why later).
2. Get Pets Treated
The following steps will eliminate the flea activity in your home. However, that will not stop pets from bringing fleas back into the home if they come in contact with them again.
Contact your veterinarian for recommendations on how to best protect your pets from fleas (DO NOT spray pets or any living thing with NatureTek products).
3. Vacuum Floors
This might be surprising to some people, but it is an extremely important step. Vacuuming will suck up some of the eggs the fleas have laid and cause others to begin hatching faster. This is exactly what we want to happen before we apply treatment. Fleas lay up to 50 eggs every day, so we need to disrupt that to get them under control.
Vacuum all of the rugs, carpets, furniture, and all other fabrics in every room seeing any flea activity. Continue to vacuum often after treatment to continue to help the process of eliminating the fleas.
4. Wash & Dry Clothes and Fabrics
The next step is to get all of the clothes, blankets, rags, and other machine-washable fabrics that have had any contact with fleas or rooms with flea activity and stick them through a washer and dryer cycle. The dryer is what we’re really looking for here because the high heat from drying them will kill any fleas or eggs that may be on these fabrics.
As with vacuuming, continue to do this regularly after treatment until the flea activity is eliminated.
5. Prepare to Treat
Make sure you’re wearing a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Use the provided safety gloves whenever handling the product. Always follow included product label instructions.
If you ordered a Double-Gallon Kit (which we recommend for interior flea infestations), only mix one of the two included product bottles for now. Follow the included directions for mixing the product and attaching the electric spray wand.
6. Apply Treatment Inside
Now with your product ready, it’s time to treat the inside thoroughly. Set your spray wand to a mist setting and begin treating all the same areas you vacuumed in every room seeing fleas. Be sure to treat any area with activity so the product can start eliminating the entire population.
Be sure to allow the product to dry for at least 30-60 minutes before allowing any person or animal to come into contact with the area. After the product has dried, there is no worry with anyone touching those areas.
7. Treat the Exterior Foundation
Once you have treated every single inside area thoroughly, finish the treatment by spraying around the outside foundation (2 feet up the wall, 1 foot out). This will help prevent further pest issues from popping up while we deal with the infestation inside.
At this point, you should still have another bottle of product you haven’t used from your Double-Gallon Kit. Store that somewhere safe and out of the reach of children for one week and then move on to Step 8.
8. Repeat Steps 3-7 (1 Week Later)
Exactly one week later, you will repeat every step from the first treatment (vacuum, wash & dry clothes, treat inside, and treat outside) using the second bottle of product included in your kit. This is necessary because fleas reproduce extremely quickly, so we need to treat close together to disrupt their egg cycle.
After the second application, you should see little to no activity remaining. If, however, you continue to see a large amount of activity, two more applications will be required. Get a second Double-Gallon Kit and continue the process for two more weeks. After two more applications, if all of the required steps have been done, any flea infestation should be resolved.
9. Recommended Products for Fleas
For fleas, you need pro-grade products that have a strong residual effect. This will allow the product to continue eliminating fleas after you’ve finished applying treatment.
NatureTek kits come with products that have these features and are fantastic at solving flea issues. To get a pest control kit to solve your flea issues, click the link below.
